Coffee: Revolver Coffee

We do love our whiskey but black coffee runs even more freely in this household so we figured it was time to give that beverage some love. And so let me start with one of my favourite java joints; Revolver Coffee in Gastown.

Revolver is a coffee nerd’s cafe. There’s not much room to sit down so many people get their coffee to go, spiraling out in every direction for as long as their coffee lasts or mill about the coffee bar talking to any one of the 3 or 4 people they’ve run in to. It’s only been open a short time, but Revolver has become the hub for Gastown coffee.

Those that do get a seat in the school bus-style booths can examine in detail the design by Craig Stanghetta (whose stellar past projects include Meat & Bread, Bao Bei and Clough Club) and listen to the soothing sounds of Depeche Mode or whatever other awesome thing they have playing. I love it.

The focus here is squarely on the coffee, however. As it should be. The concept is to have a very small menu with a rotating selection of roasters and make each coffee at the moment it’s ordered. Ritual Roasters and Phil & Sebastian are both favorites and the other day I had an excellent cup made from Sightglass beans so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that one too. As well as coffee, they also have some baked goods and teas, and if you’re shopping for home beans and a limited selection of coffee apparatus are available. At Christmastime they had bundles of classic used books wrapped in twine for sale and that just made me love them even more.

Life is too short to drink bad coffee.
